A STRANGE MARRIAGE.
It was recently reported from Chicago that Miss Phillijia Hartley, of New Y T ork, niece of Carleton Hannan, of Bombay, India, had married John Colfax, a penniless invalid, doomed to an early death by a heart leison, to fulfil the conditions of her uncle's will and secure an estate worth £1,000,000. According to Dr. N. Willis, also of India, who consented to >ict as executor for Hannan, the latter (being old and tired of the cares of managing his vast wealth) decided to turn it ovtfr to his niece, Miss Hartley. But under ~ie terms of the bequest .she..was required to marry within three, months. Accordingly, the strange ceremony was celebrated at Chicago. After a 15-minute taxi-cab honeymoon, Colfax was deliveied tn his lodging house richer by "over .O'O" for his part in the little comedy. Colfax hurriedly left, for New York. Papers filed in connection with the estate and a marriage license issued to the couple, certify Dr. Willis' account of the strange wedding. "They think I'll" die pretty soon," saM Colfax, after his bride had dropped him from her taxieab—and her life—at the boardinghonse. "And I will, I won't bother her. It was a square deal and'l, was well paid."
