TROUBLE AT KAPONGA.

SWISS BEFORE THE COURT. Last Friday evening Constable Liston, of Kaponga, found it necessary to arrest a man named Tom Lynch, on a charge of being drunk whilst in charge of a motor-car, and also with using obscene language. Usually tile task of arresting a drunken man is not beyond the policeman, but in this instance two Swiss men,-and/young at that, interfered, and endeavored to prevent' Lynch being taken to tli9 police station. These men, Mutbes and Chamberlain, created a lot of trouble until Messrs Paterson (creamery manager) and Pitcher (farmer) joined in the 'fray. The Swiss, with Lynch, were sti'.l and then Mr. W. J. Bailey took a hand and Lynch was taken to the station. It was then found that the constable had sustained a broken rib through a blow. Yesterday, at the Eltham S.M. Court. Mathes and Chamberlain were brought before Mr. E. Parrott, .T.P., and charged with assaulting the constable and causing actual bodily harm. Constablo Townsend applied for a remand till Wednesday week, the usual court day. 'He also desired that if bail was granted it should be fairly substantial, as the charge was a serious one. Bail was allowed, on two sureties of £M)O for each defendant.
