A Washington cable reports the death,; of Mr. Joseph Hodges Chdate, who irat United States Ambassador to Britain 1899-1805.
Mr. .Tohn Judge, who wrote "It's ft Long, Long Way to Tipperary,". has lost ' his only son in action. This was Private John Judge, of the Welsh Fusiliers
At St, Mary's Church yesterday, the Rev. L. If. Jones, Vicar pf Cambridge, was.married- to Miss Mildred Matthews, second daughter of Mr. and Mrs. B. J. Matthews, of Fiteroy. After the wedding breakfast the bride and bridegroom left for Cambridge. The bridegroom, who was in. khaki, leaves for camp next month, where he acts as chaplain to the 27th Reinforcements.
On Monday evening a large number of friends met in St. Barnabas* Sunday schoolroom, Opunake, to give a welcome home to Private Douglas Des Forges, who has returned wounded from the front. On behalf of the choir, of which Private Des Forges was a member, the Ladies' Guild, and the congregation, Mr. Cornish spoke a few words of welcome, expressing pleasure at having "Dotyr"' once more amongst tie, and- wishing bjm a speedy recovery from his wound, i ■ gressive euchre was then indulge, and a very jpleasant evening was si»t..i. The prizes were won by Mrs. Wnitttogton and Miss Newsham. Private Des Forges left Opunake on Tuesday morning for Botorua, where he is to undergo a course of treatment.
The death of Mr. Daniel.Berry, which took place early yesterday morning,' has removed from our midet one of the most energetic and best respected men in the district. He was the son of the late Mr. Berry, of H.M. Customs, and, after spending the early part of his career on tho Thames and West C4ast goldflelds, came to New Plymouth In .1875. He entered business as a contractor, and after a while took Mr. George Newman into partnership. The firm carried out some important contracts in constructing. the railway b*< tween New Plymouth and Hawera. They also built the New Plymouth gas works, and carried out other important works. Afterwards Mr. Berry was the active partner in the Arm of D. Berry and Cd., for many years the leading hard' ware house in this district. He took a very keen interest in irons And and was associated with the late Sir Alfred Cadman and Mr. E. M. Smith in an effort to secure British capital to develop An iron,, manufacturing industry here ana at Parapara. He wbb for some years a menjßer of the Borough Council, and before his health gave way took an active part in local affairs and general'political life. For some years, however, Mi health has been very precarious, and bis activities were much restricted.
