SCARCITY OF TONNAGE.
ONLY essentials should be EXPORTED. Wellington, May 13. In order to preserve shipping space for essentials, stated Sir James'Allen (Act-ing-Prime Minister) on Saturday, nothing that was not absolutely essential should he sent from New Zealand. Four out of the iivo ships running between the Dominion and tho west coast of America had been commandeered by the British Government for Imperial purposes; and, unless the'shipbuilding programme of the Empire mado up for the shortages caused 'by such commandeering and by tho submarines, it is probable that there would be still fewer ships trading to New Zealand. Tho producers of the Dominion, he .ided, should therefore look ahead and not pile up stocks of perishable produce which there might be difficulty in getting away. There was no information to hand to justify him in frightening people, but the public could read for themselves what was published and form their own conclusions.
