DOMINION'S PART.

EFFECT OF FREEZING INDUSTRY. ■NEW-WORKS JUSTIFIED. Wellington, Last Night. The question of whether the erection bf new freezing works had increased the demand for slaughtermen unjustifiably was raised before tho Military Board by tho military representative. Companies, he said, extended their works to take advantage of the high prices and profitable conditions, the so increased "boards" requiring filling, but there had been no Corresponding increase in the number of Cattle and sheep slaughtered. It appeared that the authorities were asked to exempt slaughtermen in the interests of the companies. A smaller number of works,, employing fewer men, could handle all the stock fty extending the season slightly. Expert evidence before the Board was against the military representative. It mentioned that the prompt handling of stock was necessary if loss was to be avoided, and additional freezing works tended to increase flocks and herds. New works were particularly valuable at the present time, as they provided storage for meat, aud assisted to tide over the periods of shipping shortage.
