DISCHARGED SOLDIERS.
PROVISION FOR THEIR CARE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. ' Wellington, Lust Night. The Hon. A. L Herdman, Minister for Discharged Soldiers, made-n statement regarding tile tasks ahead of his department after tint war. Proposals had been made to the Government, which cover ..a very complete oj;ganisation. Dealing with men on arrival, he admitted the present system of depending,on a personal interview would'have to" lie. abandoned, but other means of getting in touch with new arrivals are ready.- It is estimated that fifteen thousand men will be constantly in local campß or transports near New Zealand. These, won will lutvo tq be reabsorbed in civilian life rapidly. Many will rely on the State to "provide employment. , Mr. Herdman says the proposals include , provision for a substantial sum for the purpose of undertaking works and creating employment for discharged soldiers until normal conditions return. Assistance, will be given by the State in it hundred department*. Iflcal bodies will' probably be empowered to raise special sums without the authority of ratepayers for this worje.
