BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE MEETING. A meeting of the Works Committee of ■ the New Plymouth' Borough Council was held last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr C. 'II. Burgess), Crs J. W. Hayden, E. OrifiitliFi, Wi-'A. Collis, G. W. Browne, R. J. Deare, J. Clarke, W. F. Short, and F. J. Hill. The Inspector of Prisons wrote with regard to allowing the Council to use the prison quarry. The' only method was for the quarry to be let) on a royalty basis. The lease could only be a yearly one, terminable at three months' notice.—lt was decided to take a lease on the terms suggested. Messrs Slndden and Palmer offered to prepare a skeleton street pla.i of the borough, showing all the data required fpr the sum of £2s.—Ofi'cr accented. Consideration of a letter from the Lands and Survey Department with reference to an application by Mr Heslop Barnett for the fee simple of a closed portion of Holsworthy street was deferred for a week. Offers from Mr 11. W. Konc arid Mr E. R. Samson to give land for the purpose of widening Mangorei road were accepted. An application by Mr Fred Clave for permission to move a new building recently' purchased by him fivn near Bell Block to Fitzroy was deferred pending a report from the engineer and town elerk. The applications of Mr Ernest Luxton and Mr P. J. Flannng.ui for renewals of their billiard-room licences were granted. Tenders received for t;l<e erection of a museum were referred to the. Library Committee with power to act. A letter was received from the ITospital and Charitable Aid Board, expressing regret that the Council could not km its way to reduce the charge of Is per 1000 gallons for water supplied to the Hospital and the Old People's Home. The 'Board asked the Council to meet the Board and discuss the matter.—lt was agreed to meet the Board to the matter as suggested, although several councillors expressed the opinion that r.o reduction should be made Cr Collis stated that a complaint had been made to liim by a livery stablekeeper that although lie paid a considerable amount annually in rates his business was injured by the Council allowing motor cars to be stabled in the street 3. The Mavbr said thero might bo cases of individual hardship, but he did not see how it could have been avoided. However, if the persons aggrieved sent in a I letter to the Council it would receive due consideration. In answer to Cr Browne, the Mayor said he had taken no further action with regard to the establishment o v a municipal fish mart. He had mentioned the matter in his :ast I'tport with a view to drawing attention to it, thinking that perhaps it might be taken up by private enterprise.
