A MILLIONAIRE'S EXPERIENCE. Australian-N.Z. Cable Association. Paris, May 6. An extraordinary case is reported of an American millionaire, named James Slater, who is 68 years of age, and came to France a year ago with a young Dutch 'woman. They lived in a chateau, where she imprisoned him in a summer-house and subjected him to the most cruel treatment. She recently married a chauffeur in Paris and they forced Slater to sign cheques for several millien francs. They have been arrested on a charge of lingCOLOSSAL ITALIAN FRAUDS. ' Rome. May 7. A sensation I has been caused by the arrest of the pseudo-Count Cortese, an ox-army officer and journalist, jn connection with colossal frauds* He amassed a fortune by selling war material to Italy during the Tripolitan and present wars and then started a gigantic threatrical trust, and combine of leading newspapers. Ho surrounded himself with the (leading Italian nobility and with the assistance of two individuals resembling prominent Piedmontese capitalists secured, by means of forgeries, vast credits With nanancial houses. Commendatore Manfredini, head director Of the Bank of Rome, has been arrested as an accomplice, also Cortese's legal adviser. Cortese's personal debts exceed £250,000. PROHIBITION NOT FA VORED.
