CAKES AND PASTRY.
PROHIBITION- KOT YET. (From Our Own Correspondent) Wellington, Last Night. A report that the Government, on the reeonrottiidntion of the National Efficiency Board, intended shortly to place an embargo on the manufacture of cakes and pastry is decidedly premature. The board has not vet made a recommendation on the point, and the Government has not taken any action. The Acting "rime Minister (Sir Jaino9 Allen) stated yesterday that the report was "pure imr.funution," though he realised that noma step of the kind might be desirable later, in tho event of a serious shortage of wheat and flour. It does not appear that the saving in flour to bo effected bv prohibition of the sale of cakes and paltry would be considerable. Biaouits and sandwiches would take tile place of tho vanished confectionery on tho afternoon ten tables, and the flour, would bo used as before. Another rumor was to the effect that tho Government intended to restrict th» house to house delivery of bread. No •ten in this direction is contemplated at tne present time. The matter really is aw ranging itself, since when a bakor's carter enlists or is picked up in the ballot, his place either remains vacant or is fill* ed by some man ineligible for service, Tho number of loaves of bread delivered daily in Wellington is decreasing, and .hundreds of people who used to lake their bread at the door from the "ba« ker's man" are now calling for it at tho .stores and depots. How far this pro« cess will continue remains to be seen. It is certain that the progress 01 enlistment and the increasing shortage of la* bor will force the bakers to discouragtf liouse-to-houao delivery of bread-
