SALE OF PICTURES.
The, art sale of pictures in oil an'l I water colors by Mr. G. Baker and well known English anil Continental artists, .held yesterday afternoon in the Soldiers' Club, attracted quite a concourse of people. The majority of the works by English artists were cleared, only about 20 of this class being'left unsold. Some rare bargains were secured in this class, and buyers are even now most enthusiastic over their purchases. Baker's pictures wore hard selling, not on account of merit, but because buyers appeared to fail to realise the value of this great artist's work, particularly when the fact, is known that this great artist in New Zealand scenery is now unable, through almost total blindness, to attempt iniv further works. The tlir.-e most valwibh of the famous artists—No. (14. "The Farm Yard Scene," by George Moreland; No. (ii! "Apostle's Head/' by Reubens; and No. IE "Venus Attired by the Graces." bv Francesco Albano (1G54) —were unsold. These, with the balance of the unsold works, totalling about 35, will be sold on Wednesday next, oth ins't. Mr. J. JI. Schappiro, representative in proceeds to Auckland on Friday night, and, as promised at the sale yesterday. is returning on Tuesday with a limited number of very old solid silver pieces, which will also be sold On Wednesday, along with the balance of the pictures. Full particulars of both will be advertised later.
