WESTERN ATTACK.
TERRIFIC FIGHTING. TO BRITISH ADVANTAGE. FURTHER PROGRESS MADE. GERMANS SUFFER HEAVILY. Received April 29, 11.30 p.m. _. , London, April 29. Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig reports severe lighting, wherein we had the advantage, took place all day lonsr from the Scarpc river to the AclievilleVimyroad. We captured Arluv en Gon. elhr'and the enemy's positions on over two mileß of front north and south of the village. We also progressed northcast of Gavrello and on the western slopes of Greenland Mill, between Gavrelle and Roeux, southward of the river. We gained ground north of Monehy lo Preux. The enemy in many violent counter-attacks, with considerable forces, suffered heavily from our. artillery and machine-gun fire. Heavy fighting in the neighborhood of Roeux and Oppy continues. Several hundreds of prisoners have been taken. Paris, April 29. Correspondents indicate that the British are engaged in terrific fighting. They have already secured a portion of the village of Oppy, where the Germans offered a most determined resistance, throwing jn new divisions. Many German prisoners are arriving from the battlefront north of Gavrelle, indicative of British successes.
