BOROUGH COUNCIL. (From Our Own Correspondent). The Mayor presided at the final meeting of the present council, held on Friday, evening. THE TOWN CLERKSHIP* Mr. W. J, Tristram, who had accepted the position of town clerk during mr J .M. Poynter's absence with the Expeditionary Forces, wrote stating that he had found the duties of the office interfering with his other work, and therefore desired the position to be placed in other bands. Applications are invited for the position of temporary town clerk. ■ THE MAYOR'S FAREWELL. The Mayor (Mr. B. Dive) stated that, as this was the final meeting of the council, he took the opportunity of thanking councillors for the uniform courtesy extended to him. Since the last meeting the elections had been held, and he had been defeated in the. Mayoral contest. He had tried to do his best to serve the ratepayers, and trusted that his successor and the new council would have a successful term of office. Personally, ho had no regrets that the decision had gone against him. It was only at the request of his many friends that he ha'l gone to the poll, but having been defeated, it would allow him more time to devote to other matters. He would now bo frequently out of Eltham, but hoped that the council would continue a happy family, and that the ratepayers generally I would experience a run of prosperity unI der the new Mayor's (Mr. Crump's) guidance.
