Many of the paintings now beinw exhibited in the Soldiers' Club, New°Plymouth, were originally intended by Mr. Baker for exhibition'and sale in London, and the artist has introduced fcatuies peculiar to the Maori race and their environment. The canvases have been in the possession of the artist for many years, and have had unremitting care and attention bestowed on them during that term with a view to making the pictures as perfect as a high sense of art and painstaking effort could do. New Plymouth has thereforn been peculiarly favored in that the final disposal of what was originally intended for an ambitions market is being made here. Canvases, magnificent in breadth, conception and treatment arc worthily filled in lineal spaco to correspond, aiid the eyes may be feasted with beauties of New Zealand scenery that are nothing if not intensely realistic in tone, coloring and distance. Mist, deep shade, glorious sunset are all dealt with in a manner that appeals and attracts irresistibly. Water colors are also much in evidence, and the artist has been equally successful in this branch in bringing before the eye the vividness of coloring and charm of form that are such marked features in the oils. It may fairly be said that, to see this collection is to admire and covet also, and as it is the intention of Mr. Baker's agent (Mr. J. M. Shaniro) absolutely to dispose of the entire number, it remains for art lovers to make their selection during the few days the exhibition is open nrior to the sale on Wednesday, May 2nd.
