The only trouble now appears to be the pig-headedness of those who control the Railway Department. Not content with the instant curtailment of train services, the public and miners were further inconvenienced by the cutting out of return fares, workmen's concession*, carriage of stock and certain classes of goods, and by minor pin pricks. The public of the Dominion will show a surprising lack of initiative if they allow the Railway Department to prolong the strike, and tho racing public—through the Sports Protection League and other bodies—should demand that the Department should at once revert to the normal order of things. Possibly the Railway Department was over-eager to grasp the [ coal strike as an excuse for permanent curtailment of trains and concessions. If so. the public should say something •in the matter, and say it quickly. Strike or no strike, it is hardly like!? that the Egmont Racing Club will consider the abandonment of next month's winter meeting. The entries were stupendous, and the vast majority of the horses engaged are trained in the province—within easy walking distance, of Hawera at all events. If those entered By Auckland, Wanganui and Palmerston North owners cannot be railed to Hawera it will be a matter for' regret, hut the meeting will go on just tho same. It is to be hoped that the Railway Department will have come to its senses before May 0. Mr. Bert Coyle's task in weighting the numerous horses for the Egmont meeting was no easy one, but he to have come through the ordeal very fairly. In the Mcßae Memorial Handicap he had a good lot to deal with, and the result is a flattering handicap. Rewi Poto i 9 well up to 0.7, and others that are not badly treated are Hushman 8.4, and Sunbi'rd 8.5. Hushman tops the poll in the Tawhiti Handicap, which was only to be expected. He appears to hold most of the Bst division safe, 1 hough Revocation 7.0, Veto 7.!), and Madam Ristori G. 7 may show up in his absence. Luperir.o beat a gocd field at Avonale, and 11.5 may not trouble him in the Tangahoe Hurdles. Postillion, who jumps boldly, is well in at 10.9, and the owners of Flying Camp 10.0, and Lord Nelson 10.3, have nothng to complain of. In the minor events Veto, Fidelio, Sandy Paul, Munition, Movement, Carmel Arch and Pergola are well treated. Acceptances for the first day's events are due on May 3. Taranaki horses were 'knocking at tho door" at Treiitham on Saturday, but a brace of seconds and a third was their share. Eewipoto ran a really grfeat race in the Autumn Handicap, ana after cutting down Fiery Cross in the straight looke all over a winner. Then Seadown. Chortle llnd Bunting put in their claims, and a battle royal saw the quartette cross the line, heads apart. Golden Grafton was almost as un" lcky in the Hutt Handicap. She appeared to have the race in safe keeping until tackled by Heeltap in the last bit. Heeltap had run fourth in the Thompson Handicap the first day, and Golden Grafton was not disgraced by defeat at his "hands." Bawakore showed improved strying powers i the settlement of the Belmont Handicap, and just failed to land the. prize, The trio mentioned were all paying good "prices." .The Steads, or Stead and lnttre.il combination, got away with the bulk of tho coin at the Wellington meeting. Messrs Stead and Luttrcll took £1220: W. G. Stead £IOOO, and G. L. Stead was satisfied with the paltry £5lO. The other "battlers" had what was left—which wasn't much! Deelev rode five winners at Trentham; A. Reed three; and F. E. Jones and li. Ludlow two apiece.. Race followers will note that the Manawatu "facing Club has definitely decided to hold its ajourned meeting on May 10 and 17, the week after Egmont.
