TARANAKI ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

ANNUAL MEETING. The annual general meeting of iho laranaki Acclimatisation Society was held last evening, the president (Mr. 0. (.!. (Irover) being in tlio c-lmir. The annul report and balance sheet was read as follows:

The ■innual report was as follows:

Jn presenting the annual report your executive regret to record that the yearlias hardly been so satisfuctoy as anticipated. A ver\ large number of our sportsinen having "one to the war materially affected the income of the society, and it was found necessary to economise. In consequence the fry and ycarl'iigs were liberated, the hatchery closed down, and the services of the curator dispensed wit.]* The executive were very reluctant to do this, m their policy was to have raised a large nuin-lii-r of yearlings for liberation, but finat:c' rendered this imnussiuie T'io hlte curator left the employ of the association e.n .Inly _li. l!)lfi, and the executive were fortunate in being able to obtain the services of .Mr. George Tiruee at once. He took over the work of the hatchery with great enthusiasm, and gave general satisfaction, the yearlings he afterwards liberated being larger and tnore finished iisli than those liberated in previous years. Unfortunately there, were fewer of them than was anticipated, the previous curator having reported several occasions of loss. The fry raised and liberated by j\lr. Bruce were also good. On the night of July 31 a serious set. of vandalism by some person or persons unknown caused a licavy loss just at a critical »tage in the hatching of the ova. causing approximately a SO per cent. loss. The head of the race nvns destvovc.-l and the water cut off from the hatching boxes and tan:;? The grating of the holding pond was removed and the fine fi?!, confined therein escaped. The pheasant pen doors were prized open and the birds liberated. The matter was at. once placed in the hands of the police, hut unfortunately they wore unable to obtain sufficient evidence of justify any arrest, ft was decided early in the season to obtain a supply of Loch Leven ova especially for the stocking of the Waiwakaiho. This was done and, fortunately,' it suffered less than the remainder when the water was cut oil', and fair number nf healthy fry >'.vere reared and liberated, and It Is liopeil they wiii do well. Referring to the balance sheet, it will be seen receipts for (shooting and fishing licenses total .€'2of> us. and this added to cash in hand and balance al. bank at March 31, lfllG, in r,U £25 l?t, gave the society £230 ISs Id to \pork on. 'the expenditure amounts to £217 7s 3d, thus leaving a credit balance of ill! 10s MM. There are outstanding unpaid accounts amounting to .-£37 IPs Id, which leaves the society in debt to the extent of £2t oa fid. Tho shooting and fishing were not up to expectation-!, Birds were scarce and owing to the exceptionally dry summer experienced tbn streams for a considerable period were very low and provided poorer sport than usual. The society are indebted to Mr. H. J. Okcy for his efforts in obtaining a rebate of £S 15s from the Milliliter for Marine for brown trout ova supplied for season ll)l j-l(i Tho society also guttered a. serious loss during the spring floods when the course of the Stony River was diverted, the new course being through papa. The result is that this tine, riven, whose water was once as clear as crystal, became a muddy stream, the trout and even the eels died, and there is so far no sign of the water clearing.

Seagulls on t'lio Waiwakaiho are provin.2 very destructive and although representations liave been made to the Government in connection with their destruction, the necessary permission was not obtained.

Illicit shooting still continue?, and is tikciy to do so, until such time as the society is in <i position to appoint more rangers.

In conclusion, it is a recommendation to the incoming committee to conserve this year's revenue. If this course is followed it will enable the debts to bj paid and a substantial, credit balance to start with the following year. Furthermore it is to be hoped that bv that time the present disastrous war will be over and that the society will then enter upon a new and prospertous era. In moving the adoption of the report and balauce-slicet the chairman stated that fho year had been a very trying one for the council. They haii however, tackled the situation and bad done the best under the circumstances. It was regrettable that the hatcheries had to be dosed down but this was the only course under the circumstances. When the council took office there tai a debit of over £GO. This lmd been reduced until there was now a debit of only £24 5s lid. With the shooting season licenses all liability would soon be wiped off. It' the 'balance of tlie shooting licenses ami next season'.-? fulling licenses were conserved the society would 'bo in ;i fair tmancinl position to re-start hatching fish and pheasants next year.

After further discussion iliivin;; whUh Members agreed that it would l>e advis iiblo to keep the hi'teheries closed for n year, tlio report was adopted.
