MR. BAKER'S PICTURES.
| SOLDIERS' CLUB. The coming to New Plymouth of artists whose work is worthy if more than casual inspection, are few and far between, consequently wli»n a painter of Mr Baker's standing considers the town of sufficient importance to warrant his holding a sale o' his pictures in our midst, it will "be surprising if the Soldiers' Club, New Plymouth, in which they will be exhibited, is not crowded with interested spectators as long as the studio is open. Mr Baiter has long ago acquired a high reputation as an interpreter of New Zealand landscaj and the pictures which he has sent to New Plymouth will serve to even enhance the good impression which bis fine collection at the Christchurcli, Wellington, and Auckland Exhibitions made on the public mind. New Zealand is justly fatned for the grandeur of her scenery, and no one can look upon Mr Baker's pictures without feeling that he gives us truly typical aijd characteristic touches in all that he portrays. Whether lie paints in oil or water colors, the same success attends his brush. M Baker is exceedingly happy in his depiction of Maori life, and whether it is the picturesque pah nestling on the river bank, or the canoe on the river itself, their introduction into the scene gives a human charm to the subject, which is always welcome to the New Zealander, who takes a pardonable priile in the romance of the Maori. Mr Baker has numerous subjects'. 011 view, embracing all that is best of our mountains, rivers, and valleys, and so even are.they in merit that scarcely two people can be found to agree upon one as possessing merits greatly superior to any other. ,
