DISTRICT NEWS.
EGMONT VILLAGE. (From Our Own Correspondent). A very successful patriotic concert, given by the children, and assisted by local/ami outside talent, was held in the hall last Friday evening. The children, who had had only a short period to learn their parts, under the capable tutorship of Mrs Jones, proved by their very creditable performance that they had Deen as willing to learn as their instructress was to teach them. The. school committee, ably assisted by the ladies, had the hall very tastefuily decorated with flowers and ferns for the occasion. The accompaniments for the children's pieces were played by Miss Jones, while Mrs Monk, of New Plymouth, assisted by Mrs M. Morton and Mrs Jones, kindly played the dance music, the excellence of which was amply demonstrated by the number of couples who took the-floor. The hall was packed when at 8 o'clock the chairman (Mr E. Davis) announced the opening of the concert, which consisted of the following items:—Chorus, "O the Sports of Childhood," schoolchildren; dumb-bell exercises, Mr. Penhall's children; recitation, "Admirals All," boys and girls; song, "Invcrary,'' Mr Patterson; song, "Recessional,' school children; recitation, Mr Penhall, sen.; dancing steps, schoolgirls; comic song (encored), Mr Cole; recitation, "Somewhere a Voice is Calling,' Miss E. Cole; recitation, "All Honor to New Zealand,' 1 schoolboys; dialogue, "The Freckle-faced Girl," schoolgirls; song, Private W. Earp; song, Mrs W. 01« on; recitation, Mastor A. Penhall; song, Mr Penhall; character song, schoolgirls; song "Sea Fairies" schoolgirls; round "Good Night'' school children: illuminated club swinging,, Mr Penhall; song, "Please Give Me a. Penny," Miss Cole. The singing of this item was the signal for a shower of coins being thrown on the stage, the amount thus collected (£1 10s) being handed over to the local Red Cross Fund. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very enjoyable concert to a close. A large number stayed for the dance, which under the able M.C. of Messrs Olson and Daisly, was kept going till well after midnight. After paying i(ll exxpenses in connection with the beach picnic and concert, a sum of £! 10s is left, to be handed over to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund. The School Committee wish to thank those' ladies and gentlemen who so Kindly assistml with items, also the ladies who willingly gave their services to provide the music for the dance. LEPPERTON. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The annual meeting of the Lepperton Sentry Hill branch of the N.T.P.L. was held in the liall last Saturday evening, when Mr F. W. Atkinson presided over a fair gathering. Mr W. Roberts submitted the balance-sheet of the fete held on March 2!), and after a short discussion it was passed. It was decided to allocate £IOO to the Y.M.C.A. and £69 to the Salvation Army for the use of our soldiers in camp, on the sea, or at the frdiit. The- meeting placed on recor-1 its hearty appreciation of the help Mr Goldsworthy and his colleagues gave the Patriotic Committee per medium of the "Mock Court." The following lines were paid in after the court had closed: —Sgt. Gregor, 10s; M. Moriarty, £1; H. Wallace, £1; H. Jeffrey, ss; W. Jeffrey, ss; B. Crowe, ss. The ladies collected the following amounts in cash:— Mrs Palmer 3s, Mrs F. Old 10s, Mrs Waldie 10s;. Mrs Rowe 2s Cd, Mr Johnston 10s, Mrs Wells ss, Mr Lownsborougli £lv Mr. J. Hall 4s, Mr. J. Taylor ss, Mr C. Wills 10s, Mr H. Wills 10s," Mr G. McGonagle 10s, Mr 11. Old 10s, Mrs C'artwright ss, Mrs Hobbs £l, Jlrs Copestake ss, Mr Diggins ss, Miss Free Ds, Mrs Harvey 2s, Mrs Folrey 10s, Mrs Lucas 7s (Id, Mrs G. Hall Mr A. lloskin ss, Mr J. Payne ss, Mr J. Old £l, Mrs Freestone ss, Miss L. Taylor (concert) Is. The election of a Patriotic Committee for the ensuing year resulted as follows: Messrs F. W v Atkinson (chairman), W. A. Brown (secretary and treasurerl, ('!. Hamblyn, E. Hellier, W. Roberts, H. B. Xepper, and J. Cloke. At a subsequent meeting of the committee. Messrs Atkinson and Lepper were appointed to represent the branch on the executive oi the N.T.P.L.
Archdeacon Evans conducted morning service in St. Mark's Church last Mor day. The large congregation listened with great attention to a fine, sermon on Anzac Day and its manning. On Wednesday afternoon the Rev.'Hinton, of Waitara, addressed the school children in the tiall, they singing suitable , songs commemorating Anzac Day. In the evening the reverend zentlemnn preached a powerful "4nzac" sermon to a large congregation in the Methodist Church.
Again has our friend, "Willie 'TC'oberts, brought Lepperton factory butter first for average grade at Moturoa during the past season/' Five firsts and two seconds in seven consecutive years! Not too bad. eh, Mr Editor? The Library Committee are arrannging for additional cupboard space to accommodate between 00 and 70 new volumes which it is proposed to add to the library this winter. Subscribers will please note that the library is opmietl for. the convenience of ladies from 3.30 to 4 on a Friday afternoon, and from 7.30 to 8.15 on Saturday evenings.
