MR BAKER'S PICTURES.
feOLDIERS' CLUB. Art connoisseurs will welcome the intelligence that 112 of the latest and most characteristic paintings from tho brush of the well-known Wellington artist, Mr. Win. George Baker, mid other Continental artists, will be on exhibition in New Plymowm. on Wednesday next. Few artists rank so high in the realms of Now Zealand art as does Mr. Baker. His paintings in oil are faithful reflets of manyoosf s the best knowi; beauty spots of our lovely Dominion. He combines in his picture-painting notonly the true arts of drawing and coloring, but tho rare instinct that proclaims B poetic imagination. Recently, an exhibition of his work in Auckland created a sensation in art circles in that city. Some of Mr. Baker's landscapes and seascapes were described by Auckland visitors to the exhibition ns surpassing in intrinsic and artistic worth anything they had seen in tho limits of the Dominion, and astonishment, was freely expressed amongst the 1,000,000 persons who availed themselves of the opportunity of inspecting these art treasures that there was no charge made for the privilege. Mr. Baker's reputation is by no means a merely local one—some of his choice works were- hung at the St. Louis Exposition, and many public institutions and art galleries. Many an art enthusiast's, private dwelling is today embellished by the beautiful work of his brush. He is also a most successful painter in water colors.
