. STANLEY ROAD.

On Thursday last, April 19, our annual picnic was held in Mr. Hosking's paddock. We wore favored with lovely weather, and the event proved most enjoyable and successful, Durin" the early part of the day the children's races were held and some close and exciting finishes were witnessed. The bi"ger children were rewarded for their efforts with money, and the wee- lots were each presented with a toy. Matters were so arranged that every ehilil present (resident in the Stanley road district) received a present of some kind. After lunch the grown ups. hail their innings and a very enjoyable and somewhat exciting time was spent. The first event was the married ladies' race. Only three faced the handicanner. Mrs. R. Tile was first, to breast" tho tape, and was rewarded with a lovely cake basket, Mrs..P. H. Wellington being second. Next came the married men's race. This proved a very exciting and closely contested race. Colly Latham was first, Joe Chard coming secand, with that well known sprinter, Alex Jackson, close at his heels. In the young ladies' race Miss EMern Bbttin came first -and received a trinket box, Miss N. gangster being Beeond, and Misses B. Guppy and A. Misehewski tieing for third place. In the young men's race, Leo Kerrisk was first and T. Vickers second.
Gitla just left school.—Nellie Snngtser first, Ella Guppy second. The tug-of-war proved a splehdV event. Two strong teams were piekul from, the crowd, and nearly every trade and profession was represented. Thi; teams were very evenly matched and no less than four pulls, long and strong were indulged in before a decision was reached. _ | Mrs. M. TCnox won the ladies' nnildriving competition, Mrs. H. Whellor being second.
Ladies' Chain Stepping.—Mrs. H. Ncwby first. Sheep Guessing.—Mr.'. W. Phillips first (correct weight 1051b), Mr. ,T. Phillips and Mrs. Alec Jackson tied for second place. Men's Chain Stepping.—R. Ifcnnifield secured first.
Men's Nail Driving.—J. and SI. ehewski tied for first place.
In the evening a social and danca was held and proved a huge- aueceas. During the evening songs were, contributed by Miss Bretherton (two) in pleasing styl.', and Mr. Hamilton. Mr. Chris. Baadrup displayed unusual elocutionary powers in the rendering of a splenml iecitation. Dancing was kept up till the wee snm' 'ours. The members of the school committee and householders worked hard and cheerfully for the success of the gathering and the greatest harmony throughout. The ladies also deserve the highest praise for the quality of nrov"> ions provided and the business-like way in which they were served up. The committee wish to heartily thank all who helped in any wvy to make, the gathering a success, and especially the people of Stratford, who gave most liberally in trophies and money, both storekeepers and merchants responding most liberally with but oil J or two exceptions.
