A London cable reports the death of Georgiua ffogarth, sister of Charles Dickens. A New York cable states that Sarah Bernhardt is, recovering from her operation, which was successful.

Professor Clark, of Harvard University. lias been appointed temporary professor of physics at the Victoria College, vice Professor Marsden, who has gone to the front. Ho is expected to arrive in Wellington at the end of June.

Mr. W. A. Witch, M.P. for \Vanganui, is contesting the Mayoralty of Wanganui with Mr. C. E. Mackay "(the sitting Mayor). Mr. Mackay was first elected Mayor in 1906, and with the exception of one term has occupied the position ever since.

Mr. H. Benton, president for many years of the Dannevirke A. and P. .Society, who is now a resident of New Plymouth, has been, elected a member of the committee of the Turanaki Agricultural Society. Mr. Richard Tree Badham, of the accountancy firm of Bndliam and Biss, Wellington, died on Wednesday evening after a long illness. The late Mr. Badham, who was born in Loudon 08 years ago, came to Wellington in 1878. As an accountant, he was at the top of liis profession, and was very highly esteemed. He was of a retiring disposition, and did not take part in public life. He leaves a widow.

A telegram from Perth to tho Sydney papers states that a storekeeper at the i'l-env.uitle -Naval Office named A. H. .T. Lees has succeeded to a baronetcy. He is the second son of Sir Hareourt Lee?.. Ba't., Blnckrock, Dublin, who died recently in America. Lees, who is the fifth holder'of the title, has followed many occupations, including those of farmcV and hanker, and has been connected with the Frcniantle Naval Office for three years.
