HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

A CHRYSANTHEMUM DAY. A meeting of the committee of the I orikultural Society was held last week ilo dwuss the question of holding the j sual Chrysanthemum Show. It was deJ idednot to hoW a show tliis year as it i(ivas believed that more money could be by selling the flowers in the fclreets. Tt wis agreed that the day of ,tlip sale should be April 28 and that the money collected should be given to the I Y.M.C.A. It was, however, pointed out that the Girls' Friendly Society was runli.ng the Mart on the day 'selected and jthab the sale of flowers by the Horticultural Society might reduce their receipts, so it was agreed to confer with <liis society to arrange if possible to take the flower stall off their hands for Hint day. On llonday evening a further meeting >vas held at which it was explained that, Recording to the regulations under which the Mart was run, it was not permissible fur the flower stall to be handed over ,to any other body and that all receipts' I must 'be divided equally between the Led Cross and the Patriotic Fund. The I 'Horticultural Society therefore found pself in the difficult position of haviw iß>nicticaJly to run in opposition to the Ciirls' Friendly Society or to join in rais"iiig funds which would be placed at the disposal of other persons, no doubt for jWorthy objects, but not noeessarilv for |l' ; >at selected by the Horticultural Society. Owing to weather considerations ifiito society , was unable to make arjj'iiii'gemonts: far ahead for the' day of bale, although members had for months jmst been growing flowers to produce |mioiu>y for our men at the, front by moans of a show or otherwise. | After somo discussion on the somepbat extraordinary position which had arisen it was decided that the best [course was to co-opcrato as energetically as possible with the Girls' Friendly fcjcicty in running flower stails in conliicUon with the Mart, the hope being expressed that the Patriotic Society might see fit, out of the moiety of the money it ".would receive, to make a doMlion to the funds of. the Y.M.C.A
