ROYAL LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.

DEMONSTRATION AT THE BATB9. The North Taranaki Centre of the Royal Life Saving Society gave an excellent demonstration of its work and methods in the Municipal Baths yesterday afternoon, in the presence of a large number of Taranaki school teachers, who are now in New Plymouth. Under the direction of Mr P. A. Schwartz, teams —which consisted of two small schoolgirls, two boys, four ladies, and two men —went through tho re'scue, release and resuscitation drills on land, followed by excjcises in realistic style in thc/wate'r. The two girls and the hoys, who are pupils of the West End school, gave an especially creditable display. The varioiu swimming strokes, from the brent stioke and back stroke onwards, received their full measure of praise.

An exhibition of ornamental swim* ming by Messrs P. A. Schwartz and N. A. Christiansen caused much interest and amusement. Amongst the items were swimming the length of the bath* in four strokes,' the rolling log, the siibmarinu. and somersaults while sitting on a chair. Especially interesting were the double events, viz., the torpedo and shipwreck, and walking on the water, in the •water, in which one carried an umbrella and the other a lighted cigar-: otte. Subsequently they gave an exhibitionof fancy diving. ( The teachers were very much inter»ste3! and expressed tnemselves as very (pleased with the exhibition, for which ■they accorded the exhibitora a hearty Vote-of thanks.
