A Washington cablegram state.? that Mr. Balfour has arrived in the United States.
Messrs R. J. Deare and E. H. Tribe have definitely decided to be candidates at the Borough election. An Amsterdam message states that Dr. Lameiihof, the author of Esperanto, js dead. ■Mr. E. F. Black, of Auckland, has returned to New Plymouth after spending a month at the North Egmont Hostelry Rev. Dr. O'Callaghan, who has been acting vicar at St. Mary's for the past few weeks, wont north by the Rarawa last night. Lieut. C. W. Quilliain, whose name has been drawn in the ballot, enlisted last year, but was reserved for further training as an officer, and was about to go into camp. A Napier telegram reports the death of Mr George Rymer, a pioneer, aged 73. He took part in tho Gabriel Gully rush, and for many years conducted an extensive coaching service throughout Hawke's Bay. Mr. R. Eyre, collector of customs at New Plymouth, received a telegram from Die Minister of Defence yesterday, staling that his son, Private L. G. Eyre, lias been admitted to hospital in France, suffering from slight scalp wound, received on March 2S. A very old and respected resident of the Stratford district, in the person of Mr Charles S. Goodwin, passed away at the residence of his son, James, at Hawera yesterday. The late Mr. Goodwin was 82 years of age, and up to quito recently- was quite hale and hearty. The funeral to the Kopuafama (Stratford) Cemetery, takes place to-day. Miss Dorothy Tregenna has been appointed to the teaching stall' of the New Plymouth Girls' High School. Miss Trcgeima taught for two years in a high school in England, leaving in May, IMG, to join her parents in Canada. In September she was appointed to Grand Narrows School, Manitoba, which position she gave up three months later in order to accompany her parents to Now Zealand. At present Miss Tregenna is relieving in the Pukekohe riigli ticiiooi. A telegram was received yesterday afternoon by the Rev. \, . A. Sinclair, who has just taken charge of the Methodist church in New Plymouth, announcing the death at Christchurch yesterday afternoon of the- Rev. P. W. Fairclough, formerly minister in this district, anu well known throughout the Dominion as a zealous Christian, a talented and prolific writer, and an able and most estimable man. His death will he- deplored nowhere more than in Tnrannki, where he lm.d won (lie admiration and affection, not only of his own people, but of all classes of the community. A Press Association wiro from Christchurch states that Mr. Fairclough went into a priva" hospital on Saturday to undergo an operation for gall stones. The operation was very successful, and Mr. Fairclough promised to make a good recovery, but yesterday ho was seized with heart failure, resulting in death. Major J. A. Cameron, of the 3rd Reserve Battalion, Auckland and Wellington Regiment, brother of Mrs. C. li. Lumsden, Leppwton, writing to his mother (Mrs. J. Cameron, of 27 Ingestre street, Wangamii) from Sling Camp, Salisbury Plain, on January 31, states that he had just received orders to proceed to London lor nine days to form one of the Imperial escort to his Majesty the King on his opening of Parliament on February 7. The guard was to have been composed of officers from the overseas dominions, and the New Zealand portion was to have been made up of sixteen majors, and he was one of the fortunate ones. Major Watson, also ol Wangamii, was one-, and Major Cameron said he felt sure that Colonel Hughes would be pleased to know that the "good old 7th Regiment was doubly represented." Horses were to be supplied by the Horse Guards for the ' lunial officers.—Wangamii Chronicle.
