PARIHAKA ROAD BOARD.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the Parihaka Road Board was hold on Thursday, there being present: Messrs. ,Tas. Young (chairman), T. Harvey, M. Hickev, S Willoughby, M. O'Brien and W. B. Smith. FOREMAN'S REPORT. The foreman (Mr. Harris) reported that repairs on the Ngariki Road had been completed as far as Wrignc and Sons', and the staff wove now engaged on other work. On the Lower Kalmi Road the concrete bridge was completed, but the boxing would not be taken oil' for a week or two. He considered that the road for about four chains below the bridge should be made up and metalled where it had been scoured by floods. The willows had been cut anil the channel widened, which should to some extent prevent the water overflowing the road. Fifty yards of stone had been taken out. of the creek by the bridge, and another 150 yards could be procured lower down by payment of cartage and royalty. A man had been engaged for three clays on the Nairn Road clearing drain'. He had arranged with FredEnia to put in pipes on the Parihaka Road. It would take two men a couple of days to complete tiie work. He bad inspected the pit on the Stent Road and considered the material good enough to do the 111 chains, which would cost £4 per chain. On the Taurua Road last winter about five chains had been cut away. Mr. Dusgau bad since fenced his section, and there was now no road. On the Upper Kahili Road a man had been engaged a week removing boulders. The foreman had authored Mr. E. Duggan to fence a dangerous pit. On the linyloy Road the creek at Ayhvard's should be cleaned out for about seven chain, Mr. Aylward to pay half the cost. The staff would be engaged for two more weeks on maintenance- work on the Lower Kahui Road. Some work had been done on the Rahotu road ditches, but further work was required. He had found that pigs had damaged the Arawhata Road, but the owner had re-instated the damage. He suggested selling the lumber left over from the bridge. Mr. Williamson (surfaceman) had intimated that he was leaving unless his wages were increased to 12s per day. Members were of opinion that the extra stone for the Kahui Road could not be obtained, the road being heavily in debt. The foreman was instructed to do his best to keep the road open with the material on hand. Mr. Smith was instructed to report as to what could be done re draining swamp on Baylcy Road. The request of J. Williamson for a rise of Is per day was not entertained. PARIH4KA ROAD. F. Enia interviewed the Board and asked for payment for his work on this road. He stated that when he offered In do the work free of cost lie understood the other natives world help him, whereas he had to do all the work himself. The foreman said that Enia had given the Maoris to mulerrt.nvi that the Board would pay for the work, and when they found this was not so they would not work. The work done was valued at £ls 13s. Enia's work being represented at £ll 10s. Held over until next meeting, and if any rates are received for the road applicant's work will be recognised. CARRYING OF EXPLOSIVES. The Insurance Company notified that men carrying explosives before working hours would not be covered, unless such men were paid extra money for the work. It was decided to pay Williamson and the foreman lid per day evtra whilst earning explosives ;to work for the Board.
