WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.
♦— MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Taranaki War Relief Association was held at Stratford yesterday. Present: Messrs T. B. Tinsley (Opunake), W. P. Kirkwood (Stratford), H. Mills (Hawera), T. McPhillips (Manaia), T. B. Crump (Elthain), W. Percival (Inglewood), ",K. Brckbessinger (Waitara), Larconr (Farmers' Union). Mr. Kenniburgh, Department o." Internal Affairs War Funds officer, attended the meeting. CORRESPONDENCE. Timaru Society forwarded thanks for assistance to one of their soldiers, aitd reunited £8 expended on hi ß behalf by the association. —Received. The Manawatu Society reported thai the widowed mother of a soldier who enlisted from Stratford was receiving 10s per week from theui. The total payments amounted to £34, and the grant was reviewed each six months. The matter of increasing the amount was in the hands of Mr. Nash.—Received. The Department of Internal Affairs notified that the High Commissioner had received the amount of £2O in connection with an Inglewood soldier who had travelled back to England for further treatment. The- sum had been paid to the N.Z. War Contingents' Association, to be applied at their discretion for the benefit of the Inglewood man. The Minister of Defence regretted that lie could not supply the association wan the number of men who had enlisted and gone into camp from Taranaki. This wa« owing, to alterations in the Defence groups (Taranaki and YVanganui) since the beginning of the war.—Received. An application was made by a Waitara soldier for a grant of £SOO to stock a farm. Mr. Bcckbessingcr introduced the request. Mr. McPhiHips was agreeable to allowing the sum. The applicant attended the meeting, and stated his willingness to make payments back at the rate of £SO per annum, and the balance at the end of the term. "The application was tlufn sanctioned. Mi. Coombridge, Mapui, forwarded a statement in the case of two applicants receiving assistance from the association.' In both instances they had exceeded the amount allowed. This was partly attributable to the bad state of the roads, and the applicants thus secured larger supplies than usual each trip. One of the applicants had been very badly wounded at Gallipoli, and would never work again, and was anxious to get a footing and slock a farm. They appreciated the financial assistance rendered by the association, but did not anticipate that the allowance would cease as soon as it did. He wished the association to consider their claims for further assistance.—Resolved: That the sum of £IOO be granted. The balance at the bank, March 31, was £S3B 12s Rd, and ,Cnn:>7 2s 4d in the post office savings bank.
