Mr. C. M. Lepper will be a candldatq for election to the Hospital Board. The Rev. C. H. Grant-Cowen, vicar of Hawera, is spending a few days in New! Plymouth. Mr. B. Dive, the presont Mayor of Eltliam, lias again been nominated f»H the position. , Second Lieutenant Cecil Wilfred Quili liam has been appointed second lieuttUt ant, supernumary to establishment. ' The Rev. Dr. T. O'Callaghan, who Hi been acting-vicar of St. Mary's since the Rev. A. H. Colvile resided, returns to' Auckland to-night, . • ' At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth High School Board, Miss Vin< field resigned hor position as assistant in the preparatory department of th« Boys' High School. i Second Lieutenant Charles Gray has,' relinquished the appointment as art* officer (temporary), 11th Regiment <T(H ranaki Rifles), and has been posted tot duty at General Headquarters. ' An Auckland telegram states that Mr. Malcolm G. McGregor, barriatat and solicitor, died suddenly yesterday. He had a wide experience- of shipping law, and appeared in nearly every com tested action of that nature. Rev. P. G. Harvie, MA., vfcaw elect of St. Mary's, New Plymouth, arrives here to-night. A welcome will be extended to him at a. social in St. Mary's Hall on Thursday, night at 8, and the. ceremony of institm tion will be performed by the Ven. Arch, deacon Evans on Friday night at 7.30. Mr. Harvie has been in New Zealand eight years, and was one of five clergy who came out here with Bishop Neligan after' the last Pan-Anglican Congress, He is a graduate of Merton College, Ovford, and it is a coincidence that the last viear of St. Mary's was also a graduate of the same college. Mr. Harvie and Mr. Favcll, vicar of Te Henui, when laymen, taught in the same Sunday school in London. A very fine record of service stands to the credit of the family of Mr, Join Birnie, of O'Rorko Street, Remuera, Mr, Bimie, who himself held a commission as major in the volunteers, had seven 1 sons. One was killed in action in France, four art* at present on active service and another leaves for the front shortly. The seventh son, Gordon Birnie, ivaa called up under the ballot system. He appeared before the Military Serv*co Board last week, and hi* appeal was aU lowed on the ground that he was under military age. Hi- father stated that the lad was anxious to go to the front,' but his parents were wishful that hj« should remain until he cime of military age The lad took it as a slur that In should have been drawn in the ballot, The board congratulated Mr. Birnie on Ills fine family record of service for thl Empire. Mr. G. Elliot said there welt few families in New Zealand who b»s sent six sons to the war.
