WHEAT GROWING.
SOUTH ISLAND RESPONSIVE.
''"'.'- '"'- " Christchurch, April 9. Answering an inquiry, the Minister said that lie was quite satisfied with the result of the three weeks' campaign lie had. undertaken in the Smith Island. It had been a fairly strenuous time, as he had addressed meetings—sometimes two or there a day—at various places from Invercargill to Oxford. He hud exchanged views privately with many farmers in the South Island who would rise to the occasion and do all they could to grow wheat to meet the country's requirements. There were bound to be a few who mould raise difficulties, but, on the whole, the farmers had promised him every assistance. Farmers did not deserve all the hard things said against them by some people. In reply to further inquiries the Minister said the labor problem could be regarded as having been solved, as exemptions would be granted farmers until the crops were in, and, in addition, many retired farmers had agreed to return to work to relieve the situation. As a result of this general co-operation, the labor difficulty had lost its acutesess. He had met with very few requests from farmers for labor. The Minister added that the crisis threatening the Dominion's wiieat supply could be regarded as having been averted. Of course, much depended on the climatic conditions, but if these proved favorable he believed that the arrangements he had made on behalf of the Government would be sufficient for national requirements. In* conclusion, the Minister said that he had not yet addressed North Island farmers on the wheat supply question, but he was undertaking a series of addresses at meetings of farmers in the North Island wheat-growing areas, commencing at Masterton. He expected to receive similar co-operation in the North as he had received in the South. Already the Government had received offers of land to be lent for wheat-growing.
