HAWERA ENGINE SHED GUTTED,
On Tuesday afternoon a fire broke out in the railway engine shed. It appearc.l to have begun in the roof, perhapf through sparks from tho engine settling there. The railway staff promptly got to work with the railway hose and chemical extinguisher, and at the same time the fircbell was rung. The brigade was quickly on the spot. By this time the roof was burning fiercely • in several places, and as a gale was blowing it looked as though the shed was doomed. The brigade, under Deputy-Superintend-ent Champion, and the railway employees did excellent work, and soon had the fire well in hand. After a pretty stiff fight the brigade succeeded in extinguishing the flames, but before a good deal of damage was done. The roof was practically burned off, although the rest of the building was saved. The damage is estimated at between £2OO and £3OO. There was no insurance on the property. There was an incipient outbreak of fire in +he shed earlv in the day, which, however, was checked* by the stall'. It is remarkable that yesterday's fire was the third within a fortnight, and. in every instance the outbreak was outside the borough.—Star.
