WAIMATE PLAINS T.C. MEETING. A SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. The weather was fine, hut overcast, for the Waimate Plains Trotting Club's annual meeting, which drew a large attendance at Hawera yesterday. The Egmont Club's course was in fine order, the racing track and enclosures being remarkably green and fresh considering the dry autumn. The club's caretaker, Mr A. Morse, came in for great kudos, and earned it all. The trotting was of a high order—tlio best t'luit lias been »een in Taranaki —and the finishes in the professional events were splendid. The Cup was a pretty race, and the victory of the favorite, Lady Rothsoon, was very popular. At the conclusion of the race, Mrs A. W. Webster, the president's wifo, presented the handsome cup to A. Pringle, in the absence of the owners, Messrs Stevenson and McMath, The only unfortunate feature was the defeat of Gold Boy in the Hawera Handicap. He was winning rather easily, when some senseless person, who was standing on the inside rails and supporting himself with a post, frightened the horse, who shied right across the course, and could only be pulled together in time to gain second money. It was very bad luck for Mr T. Roe, and after the race, H. Barraclough (driver of the winner) showed good sportsmanship in extending a. hand of sympathy to the owner of the beatei? horse. The Hawera Brass Band played a long and creditable programme of music. The catering was in the hands of the Red Cross League, the ladies supplying the needs of the large crowd very cemmendably. The Red Cros* funds should be considerably augmented by t'he efforts of the ladies. Mr J. Tompkins' starting .was of a high order, and Mr 11. Brinkman brought the various lields together very well. The totalisator staff had a very busy day, record figures being hoisted. The sum of £1958 was invested ort the Cup race. Results:— AUROA MAIDEN HANDICAP (harof 70 sovs; second 10. sovs, and third, Ssovs from the stakes. One mile and a-lialf. 3 L. Goodger's b g Xavier, by Albert Chevalier, fiyrs, 7see (A. Going down the back Little Jewel ran up to Xaviei', and Mona Vale improved her position. A bad break three furlongs from home settled Mona Vale's chances, and the race resolved itself into a race between Xavier and Little Jewel. A great struggle from the distance saw Xavier win by a neck. Mona Vale .was a hundred yards away third, and Ma'rinoto fourth. Time 3niin 37 2-Csec.
