'Hirscliherg was charged with having set lire to the Longbush Cheese Factory. He pleaded not guilty and was committed to Wellington Supreme Court for trial on 'May 14. The defence was reserved. 'AVOIDING MILITARY SERVICE. Falmerston N., April 3. Probably the first case of the kind in the Dominion was heard by Mr. Kenrick, S.M., to-day. Eric. Hardy was charged that, without the consent of the Minister of Internal Affairs and whilst a reservist, he changed his name to thorn. Accused pleaded guilty. The facts as stated by the police were that accused was drawn in the ballot and failed to appear. A warrant for his arrest was issued and lie was apprehended locally. When asked bis name lie said it was (Saythorn and showed a telegram containing that name. Later he admitted that his correct name was Hardy. The Magistrate said the proper course was to imprison accused, so that the military could call 011 him at any time. 110 was sentenced to a month's imprisonment. RESTRICTING THE TRAIN SERVICE. Wellington, April 5. The City Council has passed a resolution with little opposition supporting the Government in the proposal to cut down unnecessary trains, but protesting strongly against the abolishing of troop trains.' 1

Tlie method oi 1 the appointment of members of the trustee boards was > sharply criticised at a meeting of the County Council to-day, the opinion being expressed that the Council should have been consulted. The Council resolved that the Minister in charge be informed that it is the opinion of the Council that trustee boards should have been elected.
