To-day will see the opening of the Easter racing carnival, the Auckland and Wnirarapa meetings setting the ball rolilng. On Monday the Auckland, Canterbury, Wairarapa, Feilding, Waimate Plains, and minor clubs will have their meetings in full swing, and on Tuesday there will -be further racing at Riccarton, Feilding, etc. The Avondale meeting opens on Wednesday. The Auckland Easter Handicap (one fcile) lias attracted seventeen horses, including the local horse Toatere. In various quarters Bunting, Toatere, Form Up, Hopfield, and Housewife are favored, so the result may be truthfully said to be very open. Bunting and Form Up have recent form to recommend them, and they are likely tc give a good account of themselves." The Great Northern Chair-prigm Stakes, run over six furlongs, will briaj

out Hymestra, Simonides, Estland and others. Hymestra will probably start favorite. The minor events will all draw big fields. Amongst the likely starters are consistent horses like Bir'kenvale, LlanIshen, Ulster, Glenroy, Cardrona, etc. The winners appear to be very carefully concealed. Private advice from Auckland is to the effect that Luke Wilson will have the mount on Bunting in the Easter Handicap. A. Reed will ride Form Up. <The last-named is reported to be galloping in fine style. The Toff will start at a very short price in the Great Northern Oaks. Chortle and Sheila are greatly favored for the double at the Wairarapa meeting. Analogue is in the boom for the Feilding Cup, and Moutoa Queen i s being heavily coupled with the Wavcrlcy horse in the double. Ganiecock is going well at Riccarton, and Sir George Clifford has his eyes set on the Champagne Stakes. The veteran 'chaser Pip recently fractured a leg while schooling at Ellerslie, and liad to be destroyed. " Riccarton patrons will "be regaled with the sight of a 'Melbourne Cup winner (Sasanor) and an A.J.C. Derby winner (Kilboy) next week. Both are said to 'be very At. I Amongst the entries for the Thompson Handicap are: Toatere, Rewipoto, Revocation, Analogue, and Cora Ora, Rangitero is amiss, and may be left out of the Feilding reckonings. A Dunedin writer states that in and around Wingatui there are 100 men employed, all being ineligible for active service. Blackall is anything but a good jumper, and at times refuses to look at a fence. A good judge, who has coupled Gazique with Egypt for a big sum in the Riccarton "double," reckons that he wouldn't "save a shilling" with anybody ! Desert Gold will probably measure strides with Sasanof and Co. on Tuesday. Wonder what she will pay this time 1 That promising sprinter Wrestler is suffering from a burst hoof, and will be off the scene for some months. One morning last week "Moturoa's" copy of the Daily News came to hand in an almost sopping wet condition. On investigation it transpired that our Tatavaimaka correspondent had wept right down one column, and tho reason for the "weep" was the same old tiresome 'wheeze, "racing in war time." After laboriously wading through a long and rambling account of a social —at which, by the way, everybody appeared to have had a dashed good time —the correspondent gets off the following: "The sinking of tho steamer with such enor mous quantities of Taranaki produce on board will bring more than anything else vividly home to most peopie the true frightfulness of the war. Surely its effect will be lasting enough to 'banish bridge-playing from civilised homes and liorsc-racing from the country." And then we arc regaled with the terrible spectacle of our boys in the trenches pondering on "the spectacle* of some grinning idiots watching a ratee." Tli-is just about captures the bun for pure bosh! Our worthy friend must be very badty informed if he isn't aware that quite ninety per cent, of the boys in the trenches are breaking their hearts for sporting papers and odd scraps of -sporting gossip. Though separated from their "home town" by many thousand leagues, there is hardly a Taranaki boy who hasn't already "chewed over'' the Taranaki Cup result. The Now Zealand Cup is of move interest to those good sports than the fate of the Massey Government, for oven the social doings of the residents of Tataraimaka, Those boys are not downhearted. And tho main thing that keeps them from getting "the blues" is their indomitable and unquenchable sportin" spirit, without which it would be a very l.ard task to look on the bright side of things as conditions are rt the front.
