STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) [All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will re-. ceive prompt attention.] CONCERT AT MIDHIRST. Stratford, April 4. For some weeks past the residents of Midhirst have been looking forward to the concert to be held to-night. Usually entertainments there have proved very attractive, but the committee promise to eclipse all previous efforts. The main object is to give a public welcome to two of the Midhirst soldiers now home once more. The committee are also giving their guests some tangible memento of the occasion by presenting them with addresses, the ' wording of which is as follows: "Address of welcome to Private W. C. Poynton, on his return from taving part in the great world war. In welcoming you back from the war the settlers of Midhirst and district wish to place on record their high appreciation and pride in you as one of Midhirst's boys who enlisted soon after war jwas declared. Although you have returned wounded and in broken health, we trust it will not be long before you are completely restored to your wonted health and strength." That to Gunner A. S. liartin is in similar he being amongst the first to enlist. "These will be signed by the chairman and the J'sP. of the district. The penmanship was entrusted to Mr. J. McAllister, photographer, who hag done himself credit. Both soldiers will appreciate this kindness shown them. Lance-Corporal Lester, who is leaving shortly, will also be an honored guest.
GENERAL. To-day Mr; J. McMillan, secretary of the Patriotic Committee, received the sum of £1 15s collected at Smart Bros.' premises. This wa9 the result of payments placed in a tin outside the" office by those who had cake tins, which were intended for the front, soldered ■by the firm. The amount will be placed to the credit of the Wounded Soldiers Fund.
The usual monthly meeting of the Borough Council has been fiexd for Monday week, in consequence of the Easter holidays. The War Relief Association will also meet a week later for the same reason'.
Following the lead of New Plymouth, the Stratford retailers will remain open for business on Easter Saturday. The D.0.A., Mr. Medley, of New Plymouth, presided at a meeting held at the courthouse yesterday in connection with the bankruptcy of Mrs. Ivy Harvey, confectioner. The statement placed 'before the creditors showed liabilities totalling £229 13s Bd, and assets (plant, etc.) £49 3s, deficiency £IBO 10s Bd. Bankrupt was not present. Principal creditors are: J. H. Cock .and Co., Nelson, ,£6B 10s 3d; Southern Pfcross Biscuit Factory, Wanganui, £lO 8s 2d; Rigg and Co., Wellington, £l4 IBs 9d; Dr. Paget, £56 16s 9d; Windsor, Wellington, £3O; Fulness and Co., Auckland, £ll 13s sd. It was resolved to communicate with Mr. Harvey, at Ohura, concerning his wife's (bankrupt) non-appearance at the meeting. Amotion was also carried instructing the D.O.A. to Tealise on the goods by sale or tender. Debtor has an interest in her mother's will contingent on her father's death, ibut no figures were available.
Borough workmen are making fair progress in strengthening by concrete facing the embankment of the Patea river at Victoria ibridgc. Judging from appearances, the repairs were very necessary. Railway men are also engaged in concrete work at the centre pillar of the railway bridge. A cutwater 'shield is being built, and this will prevent logs-and other drift-wood lodging against the piers. The low state of the river is of great assistance in the work.
An item of interest to many Stratford folk is the intimation that another well-known ex-resident of this prosperous centre has won honors at the front. The soldier gaining the distinction is Dr. Carbcry, and the honor is that of D.5.0., a recognition of distinction rarely won hy a doctor. Good luck to hiin and others engaged in similar work.
