UNNECESSARY AND HARMFUL EXPENDITURE.
To the Editor. Sir,—ln view of the announcement that a member of the National Efficiency Hoard will lie in our town on Tuesday next to hold an inquiry, I write to express the hope that some steps will be taken to adequately set forth the unnecessary and to some extent harmful expenditure which is continually going en, We have had since Christmas last two race meetings of two days each, and in addition to the hotels, there are nightly open three picture shows and a number of billiard saloons, whilst euchre parties, dances and theatrical and other travelling companies are matters of frequent occurrence. Surely in the presence of the cost in treasure, and stid more in life, it is high time that some curtailment should be made, and our young people more especially be sought to take a more serious view of the present critical and trying time. I do not know what course should be followed in order to represent this matter at tin forthcoming inquiry; possibly our May or, as chief citizen of our town, may see his way to do that which is best to be done, and with the hope that the Government will ere long use whatever power it may possess to curtail all undesirable expenditure. l am, etc., W. DREW,
