VISIT OF HON. G. W. RUSSELL.
The Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister fo» Internal Affairs) arrived in Hawera on ' Saturday morning, afterwards visitint Eltham, and arriving at New Plymouti on Saturday evening. Hi was met at Hawera by Messrs G. W. Tayler (chairman), T, A. Winks, R. J. Linn and Mates, of tlio Hospital and Charitable Aid Board. They laid a, programme before Mr. Russell for improvements and additions to the hospital, including a new maternity ward, new male and female wards, addition* to the children's ward, and a new isolatlon ward. It was suggested that this work, which is estimated to eost about £35,000, be extended ovei a term of five i years. The Minister intimated that he would consider the proposals. Mr Russell was met at the New Ply* mouth station by the Mayor (Mr" C. fy Burgess) and Mr H. J. Okey, M.P. In the evening the Minister was waited on by a deputation on some private ters. Arrangements had been made bf the Mayor for the. Minister to vUlt tho North Egmont Mountain House yesterday, but owing to the bad weather the visit was abandoned. Though nothing definite has been arranged for to-day, it is understood that the Minister will, during the morning, visit tho hospital and the Old People's Home, and will also confer with the Hospital Board on soma important matters. Later, he will visit the Breakwater, the oil wells and the ironsand "works, and in the afternoon will visit Waitara. On Tuesday he will leave by the mail train for Palmerstou North, where lie will confer with the Palmerston North Hospital Board on Wednesday, leaving for Wellington tea same evening.
