SERIOUS ALLEGATIONS. AGAINST TOTALISATOR OFFICIALS. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, March 30. A statement was made by a witness in a betting case in the Police Court that the totalisator officials habitually, altered the figures on the betting tickets, that it was common to accept large sums before the time and not put them on the totalisator till after the bell had stopped, also to alter the clock so that the totalisator closed before or after the correct time. TURF TOPICS. (By/"Moturoa"j. The Easter racing carnival opens on this day week, when the hall will" he set rolling at Ellerslio. On Easter Monday there will he racing at Ellerslie, Feilding, Rieearton, Hawera (trots), and minor centres. The Canterbury and Feilding meetings conclude on Easter Tuesday, and on the following Wednesday and Saturday the Avondalo meeting will be in full swing. The kill-joys will then get busy denouncing everything in the racing line.
So far the only people who are "rooting up" against Sir' Geo. Clifford's ahlfl statement regarding racing in war time are the same old milk and water cranks who are notorious for seeking cheap ad-
vortisement by opposing everything that the majority of the public demands. The opinions of Mr. L. M. Isitt are particularly amusing. When did he claim to be a racing expert? The wild assertions of some biassed busybodies are about as useless as a plate of last year's oysters. Mr. L. M. Isitt fell in very bftdly when lie claimed that thoroughbreds were only useful for rushing over short bourses, and his wild statement immediately drew from Mr S. Luttrell a challenge to put five thoroughbreds up against Mr. Isitt's (or anybody else's) five nonthoroughbreds for a stake of £2OO to race over 100 miles. Whether Mr. Isitt will come up to scratch remains to bo sewi!
. The Waimate Plains annual trotting j meeting, which is set down for Eastei | Monday on the Hawera Racecourse, promises to he a most enjoyable fixture. The entries are first class, and the handicaps have been carefully prepared. Acceptances close on Monday, April 2. Egypt is said to be galloping in good style, and those who saw him at Hawera in the summer will be prepared to set. him taking a big hand in the settlement of the Great Autumn Handicap at Riccarton next week. The Wanganui.Cup winner, Client, has freshened up after a short respite, and is in work again. Leonta is engaged in both hurdle events at Feilding, and if as -fit as they say, could carry the grandstand and win the hack event. The Feilding Cup looks very open. Client must be given , a eliance with 0.2, and Rangitero, MultH'ipal and Analogue read best of the others. Play Off has caught it hot in the Mangaone Stakes, and at the weights Hushman. Interlude, Veto and Madam 'Ristori all appear better treated. Madam Ristori is very fit, and a win should come her way shortly. ~ A festive youth, nnmc.d Ross, rider of Wake Up in.the Hurdles at Faeroa, gave his mount a trial flutter over one of the fences prior to the race, and thereby incurred the displeasure of the steward*. Once upon a time this was quite a common occurrence, and the writer has seen the clerk of the course join in the jumping exhibition as well. Needless to say, the clerk was generally "well sprung.' - Wo take our sport sadly nowadays! Whoever told the owners of the ten equities that lined up for the Paeroa Steeplechase that they were possessed ■ of jumpers should be handed over to the . police. The winner, Pip, was the only , one to get around without mishap, the i others doing all sorts of exaggerated i Chaplin stunts at Die various fences. It was ,a great race! Jockeys Deeley and O'Shea will be , riding at Riceavton at. Easter. Looks as , iF the "Christmas'' jockeys will get a 5 chance at Feilding, Talk about small dividends! At Lake County the other day Len King rode siv winners, but a pound invested on each of his riders would have only resulted in a profit of £1 I4s Gd. Mr. J. Hnwkins last night shipped Toaiere by the Rfirawa for Onehunga, in order to fill engagements- in Auckland.
