STRATFORD.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
[All communications, letters, etc., left with Mr. J. Hopkins, bookseller, will receive prompt attention.] Stratford, March 29. At the Stratford County Council meeting contract No. 972, 200 yards of boulders, was let to W. L. Stocks, and No. &73, I.OCO yards of shell rock, went to W. Smith and H. Morrison. No tender was received for supply of boulders on Brooks road.
Mr. All. Coleman, who has filled the position of county clerk ever since the formation of the Whangamomona County Council, has resigned that position. Members of the Council were loth to lose the services of a man who had always striven to give his best services to the Council. Eloquent testimony was made to the fact that at no time had there been friction between the clerk and any councillor, whilst relations with other bodies had also been of the best. Efforts were made to have Mr. Coleman to reconsider his decision, but increased private business necessitated the steps he had taken. Mr. Coleman had promised to supervise the clerical work pending other arrangements. Tiie North riding foreman, D. Brown, was obliged to work all last Sunday removing an obstruction caused by a slide in a cutting owing to rain. His action was much appreciated by a local medico, who thought that the Council might recognise the man's work in the circumstances.
Eight residents of Radnor road waited on the County Council on Wednesday regarding the state of the road. It was pointed out to them that owing to scarcity of labor the work was being delayed. The deputation practically wasted the best part of a day in waiting on the Council, and then the suggestion was thrown 'out that they (the deputation) might assist a surfaceman in the mat'' ter. A councillor remarked that the deputation would have shown good results if they had put the hours taken up in coming to Stratford on the road instead.
The county meeting on Wednesday was a lengthy one, lasting from 11 a.m. till nearly 7 p.m.; in fact, the visiting presmen had to sprint to catch the last train. A great deal of time was taken up in deputation work, no fewer than four parties waiting on the Council. A very pleasant evening was spent at the Toko Road Hall on Wednesday night, when a concert was held in aid of patriotic funds, which should benefit to the extent of about £ls. Songs, etc., were contributed by Misses Cooper and Rowe and Messrs Walters and Rowo, whilst Misses Edwards and Rowe were accompanists. A whistling competition ("Tfpperary'' chorus) was v,on by Miss Smith, and a hat-trimming contest by Mr. Young, who generously re-donated the prize, a shaving pot, and this was sold for £l. A fat lamb found so many owners that by the time the last owner claimed possession the sum secured was £8 10s. The floor was in good order for the 40 couple present, and the simper, provided by the ladies, was of the best.

Furniture and sundries at usual auction rates. Mr. J. McMillan, secretary of the Patriotic Committee, desires'to acknowledge the receipt of £ll2 from the Ladies' Patriotic Committee.

Clients on the look-out for desirable dairying or grazing land, town properties, etc., will do well to get in touch with Mr. Jackson who continues business in his old offices, next Masters, Ltd.
