A PATRIOTIC DISTRICT.
LEPPERTON-SENTRY HILL FETB. IN AID OF Y.M.C.A. FUNDS. That residents of the Sentry Hill-Lep-pertou district are to the fore, in raisi'ta funds for patriotic purposes was evidenced yesterday at the grand patriotic fete in aid of the funds of the Y.M.C.A. and kindred associations in their magnificent work among our men in camp, at sea, and in the firing lines. The fete was held in the. picturesque grounds of Mr S. Clifford's homestead, which were generously loaned for the occasion, and proved ideal for the purpose. All the Bottlers in the district had worked hard end unitedly to ensura and are to be congratulated on the result of their efforts, as probably about £IBO, >vas raised, a considerable sum when the limited area of the district and its previous efforts in a similar direction are noted. The attendance was good, about £lO being taken at the gates by Mr. J. Hall. The large committee workoi. well, but, of course, the bulk of the work fell on the chairman (Mr. F. \\. Atkinson) and the secretary (Mr W. Roberts). •'■■ THE STALLS. The ladies had charge of a number oi neatly arranged stalls, which were laden with good things, and which all di good business. The catering, which was in charge of Mesdames F. W. Atkinson. H. N. Blackball, Roberts, Dickinson, Little, Taylor, Clark, Pavne, P. Sampson, R. Giddy, H. B. Lepper, E. W. Wheatley; Misses Luke, Wright, Old, and Ackland, was right up to the moment and realised £H 4s tid. The. miscellaneous stall (Mesdames P. H. Sampson, Stimpson and Ackland) contained a wide range of articles, which realised £l4, while Mr. Fairbrother auctioned >a number of articles ranging from a sucking pig to a plate of eggs, adding about £0 15s to the funds. Misses Wheatley and Giddy, who were- in charge of the sweet stall, collected £5 12s od, and Master Atkinson (soft drinks) £l. Mrs Sutherland also did fair business in the gipsy tent. There wore various guessing competitions, a cake in charge of Mrs F. Sampson being' won by I'. Sampson, and realising £1 lis, while a cake dish, in charge of Miss Atkinson, won by Mr. Baker, realised £2 Is. Othof competitions were to be decided at the hall. Collections by the ladies added £S Is. SPORTS AND SIDE SHOWS. •A strong sports committee, of which , T. Baker was chairman and A. Hellier secretary, kept matters moving. Messrs C. Munro and H. N. Blackball were judges and W. Cartwright and P. Scmp- , son handicappers. Mr. P. Sampson did . good business with the skittle alley. He ! was also kept busy at various side ! [ svents. Guessing the. weight of a pig: Actual weight 241bs; Mr D. B. McKce (181b 12oz) 1. Tug of War: Single men (M. Lepper, k. Sampson, W. Fusscll, L. Copostakc, F. Taylor, R. Fussell, Oke Taylor, 'and W. McGonnell) defeated the. married men (J. Phelan, F. Brown, E. Hnllicr, J. Old, F. Hoskin, F. Sampson, L. Longstaff and P. Sampson) two pulls out of three.
A number of children's races were held during the day, Mr. W. A. Brown controlling this department.
THE MOCK COURT. This proved very entertaining, and i •added considerably to the funds. The court was fitted up in a marquee., and Constables W. Healey and F. P. Jones were actively engaged throughout the afternoon in haling willing offenders before the court, where a sedate and "be-, nign" judge, Mr. G. S. Clifford, was -kept busy handing out fines, the money being promptly forthcoming. Crown Prosecutor Goldsworthy, in his inimitable way, conducted the prosecutions, and Judge's Associate C. R. Fairbrother also attended to his official duties well. The Jerk of the court, Mr. F. Crowe, r"i r \\'d and collected all fines, which' totalled £SS lfis (id. The charges with the fines were:—
\V. Roberts—squeezing butter in a secluded spot, 20s, and an additional 20s for saying nothing; J. Clokc—betraying acquaintances under the cloak of friendship, 20s; G. Luke, being called after an apostle when ho could not help it, 2Cs: V. Hoskin, ill-treating a motor ear by driving it up.a hill without benzine, £j —a hardened criminal; E. G. Hamblyn, altering the name of a street twenty years ago without the consent of an Order-in-Council, dismissed as he had already been sufficiently punished, but fined 20s on another charge; F. Hellier, never speaking his own name without the use of bad language and tying goats to blackberry; he put up a good defence, and was acquitted, making a donation of £2 2s to the court; H, B. Lepper—charged with falsification of weights and measures, £2 10s, mlso £2 10s for pleading not guilty; VI. A. Brown, cancelling one of Lepperton's '•Wrights" and associating mostly with young children, £3 3s; W. N. Ackland, charged with publishing paragraphs in the public press, fined the nominal sum of £2 2s; F. W. Atkinson, causing the gathering of innocent people for the purpose of relieving them of their hardearned coin for patriotic purposes, £2 10s for pleading not guilty, 10s for contempt of court, and £2 for other charges; F. Crowe, a bird without feathers, 20s, also 10s for another charge; J. Paul, paying too much attention to Wells in the days of his youth, 20s; J. Old, having no nam* is; Mr and Mrs
jointly charged on various offences, and collectively fined £4 12s; P. Taylor, illtreating goats £1; J. Taylor, too lata for court, £1; J. Phelair failing to stay in bed in tire morning, ids; John Sutherland, selling lani not his own, A. B. Giamlin running car without charging it, each 10s; J. P. Harrison, shelling peas £1; F. Brown, fleecing lambs £1; and L. Copestake, allowing blight in his turnips, £2 2s; P. Dickinson, cultivating blackberries 20s; C. Hinge 10s; Mrs Stimpson, acquitted of all charges, but fined £1 for being much too charming; H. L. Cutfield, trying to be good, 10s; C, A. Hammcrton, .selling cattle not his own, ss; C. Clifford, aiding and abetting in allowing a crowd to assemble, £2 2s for being related to the court; W. Messenger, a willing messenger, £2 2s; A. Roberts, ill-treating cows by using machines, £1; J. Old, who appealed, was fined an additional 10s; W. A. Cartwright, ill-treating nails, ss; E. Beckbessinger and T. Buchanan, "two stray dogs from home,". £2 2s each, reduced to 10s in the plea of poverty; B. Wells ss: Mrs Newton King, upsetting the dignity of the court, £10; Constable Healey ss; Prosecuting Counsel Gohlsworthy, aspiring to be a Sunday school teacher, ss; Judge's Associate C. R. Fairbrothcr, ss; Judge Clifford, for not executing his duty, pleaded not guilty and was mulcted in 10s fines a total of £5.

An excellent programme was rendered.
