FIRES.

FIRE AT HAWERA. I There was a big Maze at Nolantown at 10.20 o'clock on Monday night, when a six-roomed wooden dwelling, owned by Mr. S. Amon, of Alton, and occupied by Mr. Andrew Blackett, on the stalf of Messrs. Gibsons, Ltd., was totally destroyed by fire. A piano and a fewodds and ends were the only effects saved. The Fire Brigade, which received the alarm from No. 4 box, near Symes' mill, was promptly upon the scene. The fire had obtained a good hold, and owing to the lack of a water .supply the brigade was unable to stay the progress of the flames, which quick-, ly enveloped the building and fazed it to the ground. The heat became excessive and ignited the adjoining dwelling, belonging to Lieut. A. J. Glasson, who is at the front, and occupied by Mr. Allan, noxious weeds inspector. The brigade then directed their attention to the second danger which threatened, and with the. use of a hand pump, two of which are carried on the motor tender, soon had the fire vmepe control. Tho house was saved, but it was scorched considerably. Willing helpers, when it was seen that the building was alight, soon had the heavy furniture removed to a place of safety.

At the time of the fire Mr. Blackett and the two children were in bed, and Mrs. Blackett was at a picture theatre. Mr, Blackett was awakened by the crackling of flames, and he lost no tiny: in arousing the children and getting them safely outside. , Mr. Amon's dwelling was insured for £450 in tho Standard Insurance Office (Messrs. James and Gillman), but there was no insurance on the furniture. This is the second fire in Nolantown within .i week, and gives new emphasis to the district's need of a water supply, says the Star.
