OTAGO DENTAL SCHOOL.
By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, March 27. The Acting-Director of the Otago University Dental School, replying to the statements of the Hon. Mr, Russell, published on Saturday, says that during the last six years 32 men had presented themselves fori examination under the Dentists' Acts of 1910 and the 1911. He was open to admit that these were men who otherwise would have had to pass through the college, and this deprived the college of a large number of students. Fifteen had obtained the degree of B.Ds. in the last sis years, and two men had obtained registration by reason of their British qualifications. This explains where the 49 new dentists starting in New Zealand in si\ years came from, not, as the Minister said, from American colleges. The Acting-Director cites instances in refutation of the statement that the method of gaining .the dentist's degree in New Zealand had proved a colossal failure as a remedy for the shortage of 6tudents.
The Acting-Director says the remedy is to make available to dental students bursaries such as are proposed to be Riven to medical students, home science students, and teachers.
