South Taranaki folk, after \jisiting Hie Mokau district always have an interesting story to tell, and the latest is related by a contributor to the Hawera Star, who "polishes off" the prohibited area' in these terms:—"lt is probably well known that the country north of Urenui comes within 1 the prohibited area of the King Country, and that no liquor licenses are there allowed. It is a byword through there, however, that the only thing that is really prohibited is "prohibition," and even on a casual trip one sees ample evideneos of the enormous quantities of liquor that must be consumed. Whisky drinking goes on ' quite openly, and eases of "empty returns" may he seen at the townships. ! Apparently liquor may be taken .in j bulk, and consequently is consumed in ' bulk, with the result'that there is far more outright drunkenness in these sgmall settlements than Is ordinarily met with in well-conducted licensed areas. It seems quite evident that so long as liquor is allowed by law to go Into those, areas, so long wili tho present undesir- ' able condition of thing* last. Either there should be notliqlwr at all, or, if there is to be liquor, it should be under proper control." '
