Lieut. Maurace Sprott, son of tho Ang ican Bishop of Wellington, who was mentioned in despatches some time ago has now been awarded the Military uoss. Lieut. Sprott was wounded in the Somme offensive, and as soon as he recovered returned to the fighting line, where he has won his latest honour. Mr. G. Kilvington, who was recently transferred to Whakatano as postmaster commenced duty there on Thursday! irevions to his departure he was presonted by Mr. Callaghan, Hawera, postmaster, with a valuable oak clock; the fiitt of: the staff. Reference was made to •Mr. lulvmgton's long association with the Hawera office, and good wishes were expressed for his fuft^e.

Wore proceeding with the business at the- meeting of the Hawera Fire Board on Friday, reference was made by all the members to the death of Mr. H. Stocker, a valued member of tho Board, and it was resolved to place on record the Board's deep regret at tho loss sustained by it in his removal by death, and its appreciation of his loyal and • efficient service during his wh'olo '«ro. of membership. Mr. E. P. Webster, who has been appointed to tho vacancy, was welcomed to the Board.
