JUVENILE THIEVES. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, March 23. Two boys, aged 15 years, were commit* ted to the Burnham Industrial SchoOi by Mr. T. A. B. Bailey, S.M., for stealing on February 28, at the Addington saleyards, £2lO 18s lid in cash an £297 lis Gd in cheques, the property of tho New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited. One boy ran into the office at the yard and grabbed the cash box, and the pair divided the contents and tore up tho cheques and fifty £1 notes, which they put down a drain.
SHORTAGE OF TIMBER WORKERS. Wellington, March 23. A deputation representing sawmillers from Waimarino down to Inveroargill waited on the Hon. A. L. Herdman, Attorney-General, to-day, to point out the difficulties the industry was meeting as the result of the shortage of labor, and to request that the Moratorium Act, which at present only applied to niorti gages, should be extended to timber leases and cutting rights. The Minister was sympathetic, but pointed out that many difficulties stood in the way. Ho would consult the Crown law officers and see what could be done.
TIMARU'S HARBOR. Timaru, last Night. . At the annual meeting of tho Harboli Board to-day the accounts showed a de* flcieney of ££0!)(i on tne year's work. The chairman stated that 34 pverseas vessels called during the year, against. 01 for the previous year; 13 steamers called for fro?,en meat, whereas 30 took the same quantity in 1011. The valuo of the overseas trade (omitting coastal); was about 1J millions. It was twe millions in 1915. In view of the fall in revenue, the chairman recommended fol-, Jowing the example of other boards in, revising the wharfage and shipping dues. It was decided to lay up the dredije for another year, as tho depth of water waa ample for requirements, there being, from 24 to 25 feet in the outer channel at low tide. It was stated that sincej tho bucket dredge started in 1901} £86,000 had been spent on dredging.
