THE TIGRIS FLEET. HELPS TO ROUT THE ENEMY. Received March 22, 10.45 p.m. London, March 22. Mr. Candler, the war correspondent, [writing from Addiaeh, describes the I splendid work of the Tigris fleet, which, jointly with the cavalry, turned the Turkish retreat into a rout. The fleet encountered a desperate resistance at Navirkellah. where the river turns a complete hairpin bend, placing the passing vessels under fire from threesides. Here the enemy artillery and machine-gun teams were entrenched, and at the apex of the bend raked the gunboats coming and going, and fired point blank at them as they passed. Our pompoms and machine-guns enfiladed the positions. The fleet rounded the bend at sixteen knots, when it was enabled to play havoc with the Turkish transport and gun team*. Our horse artillery, effectively co-operating, created hopeless confusion among the fleeing enemy. The gunboats also engaged the enemy shipping at extreme range and captured several steamers. russia^e^teTturkey. London,, March 21. A wirele3 Russian official message states:—ln the direction of Sakiz we are pursuing the Turks. We have en tcred Turkish territory.
