Our light troops maintained contact with the enemy between Roupy and St. Quentin, We forced a passage this morning east jf Hain at two points on the Somrnc Canal, in face of vigorous resistance. We cleared the north and east banlis of the canal and drove the enemy as far as the outskirts of Ciastres and Montescourt, The enemy flooded this region and the majority of the village® before our lines aro burning. In the region of St. Quentin we progressed north of Terteur. On the Somme there were skirmishes in the valley of Ailette. The enemy, who vas occupying the east bank of the Crozat Canal and Ailette, vigorously oombarded our lines. We considerably progressed north of Soissons, fighting several lively actions. The majority of the reconquered villages are ruined. East of the Meuse the enemy launched several attacks on the Calonne trenches, hut all failed. CONFIDENCE IN FRENCH MINISTRY.
