GRASS FIRES AT WELLINGTON. By Telegraph.—'Press Association. Wellington, March IS. Fires, which have raged with varying fierceness for days past amongst the hills on the eastern side of the harbor, seem to-day to have been fanned afresh by a slight northerly breeze. The city lies under a considerable pall of smoke. Definite information is diiljcult to obtain as to damage, but the quantity of smoke overspreading the countryside suggests that the settlers are heavy loseTs. An unconfirmed report is current that Are swept through the beautiful bush fringing Lowry Bay, near the Soldiers' Convalescent Hospital. Fires nave been eating their, way through, for several days. Tho dry spell is also causing anxiety concerning the city water supply. The Wainui reservoir is very low, and cltiztns have been exhorted to be specially careful.
