BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. The ordinary meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council was held lust evening. The Mayor (Mr. C. H. Burgess) presided, and the councillors present were: L M. Monteath, J. S. S. Medley, J. W. Hayden, F. E. Wilson, H. A. Johnstone, W. A. Collis, W. F. Short, F. J. Hill, S. J. Smith, E. Griffiths, J. T. Mannix, A. E. Watkins. -MAINTENANCE OF TRAM TRACK. Messrs R. IT. Bartley and W. 11. Cook, tramways and borough engineers rcspeclively, reported with regard to the maintenance of the tramway track. The engineers adhered to their previous opinion that the maintenance could be met by £201) per annum. This amount would* include repairs to the road adjacent and near the tram rails, and the keeping of the road surface up to the level of tlie train rails. The tramways department would carry out all Repairs to the track and other work appertaining thereto. The arrangement would be put into operation on April ] next and would alfect the whole of the tramway route. The report was adopted.

WAIWAKAIHO BRIDGE. Tho Taranaki County Council wrote with regard to the reconstruction of tho Waiwakaiho bridge. The borough engineer estimated that the work would cost £2IOO. He was quite satisfied with the work that was being done, land felt sure these was no room for misunderstanding. Mr. Cook mentioned that the Public Works Department would not raise any objection to trains passing over the structure when the present structure was iinished. On Cr. Johnstone's motion it was decided to write to the Public Workß Department asking that in the event of the cost of the work exceeding £I6OO the Department pay ono-third of the actual cost.

VEALE ESTATE RATEPAYERS. Two ratepayers on the Veale Estate waited on the Council and asked that the watfer service be extended to their properties, and that the roads approaching their properties he put in orderReferred to the engineer.
