WAR RELIEF ASSOCIATION.

MONTHLY MEETING. , *~~ v (From Our Own Correspondent.) The monthly meeting of the Taranaki War Relief Association was held at •Stratford to-day. Present: Messrs L. H. Burgess (New Plymouth), W. IJercifval (Tnglewood), R. Dunn (Farmers' Onion), W. P. Kirkwood (Stratford), 11. Hills (Hawcra), T. B. Crump (Eltliam), md T. McPhillips (Manaia). CORRESPONDENCE. An application by a returned soldier for a loan of £4OO has been granted, i.ubject to the Association's solicitors jeing satisfied as to securities. The applicant verbally requested the matter to remain over for two or three weeks. The case of granting assistance to n South Canterbury applicant was reportMi on by the Manaia delegate. The South Canterbury Association/had been notified of this Association paving £3 I'or necessities on his account. The Defence Department had forwarded £4 12', which had been handed over to the soldier. It was resolved that the South Canterbury Association be informed by ivire that this Association had granted £5 towards expenses in conveying the soldier back to Timaru. Mr. Phillips also stated that the soldier in question desired to thank the Taranaki Association for the care and attention extended to him.

Hon. ,T. Allen, Minister of Defence, requested particulars as to the number of men who had enlisted from the Taranaki ""-rived, and information to be forwarded.

The Wa.rarapa Patriotic Association wrote on behalf of a Taranaki soldier, requesting information as to what assistance they were giving to returned soldiers. The secretary replied, giving information requested, and asked the Wairarapa Association to forward some further information in this particular case for the consideraton qjf the executive.

The Canterbury Association forwarded £5 12s. an amount expended on their behalf by the Association here.—Received.

Patea Committee notified that they bad deposited £IOO with the' Patea freezing Company.

PATRIOTIC FUNDS. The financial position of the Ayociation "showed bank balance on March 7 as £1440 12s 10d, and Post Office Savings Bank £7G57 2s 4d, and interest from the latter £43 1b Id. £2114 Is 3d had been transferred from New Plymouth Committee, which included interest £lO7 10s, of which £47 10a was accrued interest at date of authority to transfer funds to the Association. The Wounded Soldiers Fund (excluding Hawera) was £35,169 13s 4d£ and the Hawera total stood at £8716 13s on December 31, 1916. A statement of receipts secured since last meeting showed a total of £1250 4s, including amounts of £IOOQ from the Stratford Committee and £IBO from the Manaia Committee. The County of Egmont League replied, in regard to the association's request that monev in the Post Office should be transferred to the association, that the matter \vould be attended to at the end of February, so as to secure interest for that month. The Manaia Committee, in reply to a similar application, forwarded £l'Bfl, and notified that the question of other investments by the association were receiving attention. The Hawera Committee also replied that they had passed a resolution to transfer funds to the association. The under-seeretary and officer in charge (War Funds Office Department of Internal Affairs) had been written to as to reason for holding up the consent to the transfer of Hawera funds. Some discussion resulted regarding the payment of secretaries, and the action of the New Plymouth and Manaia Counties in voting their secretaries £SO and £-20 respectively, was approved by the association. The Finance Committee were instructed to bring down a, report at next meeting as to the advisability of lending small amounts on first mortgage, also as to terms and maximum amount to be granted. Delegates reported on several cases in their respective districts, and other routine work was accomplished, and the ' meeting then adjourned.
