Samuel Edward Fitzgerald and Herbert Hill were charged before a courtmartial with being deserters from the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. Fitzgerald was drawn in the first ballot, and Hill in the second. The case of Fitzgerald is, being heard first. At the time he was apprehended lie signed on as a steward of the steamer Manuka. Detective-Sergeant liawle stated that accused said he had no desire to ovade bis responsibilities. Had he done so he could have deserted at Sydney. He further mentioned that he had attempted *;o sign on a vessel for San Francisco, but had been unable to do so on account of being unable to get a clearance from the Manuka in accordance with the custom.
