NORMANBY HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.
THIRTY-FOURTH ANNUAL SHOW. The thirty-fourth annual show, which was held at Normanby on Wednesday and Thursday, proved'one of the best that the Society lias held for many years, thus reflecting the increased interest that has been 'taken in the affairs of' the Society by several of its e>i thusiasts during the ,past year, an interest that if maintained should again place the Normanby show on the high plane of a few years ago. Entries in all classes exceeded 10(10. being 198 in excess of last year. The stewards, Mesdames Scott, Reddle and Kilvington, and Misses Linn, McKoy, Clement,'Cox-' head, and Sowerby, and Messrs Andrews, Mitchell, Pollock, Gibson, Coxhead, Parslow, Anensen, Mills, Archibald, Dee, with C. Paine as supervisor, rendered very valuable assistance, which contributed largely to the success of the show. Mr. D. A.' Stewart as secretary carried out his manifold duties most efficiently, the organisation of the show being well nigh perfect The following were the judges in Ihe various sections:—Pot plants: Mr Mors-. head. Cut flowers: Mr. C. Goodson. son. Bouquets: Mr R. 0, Welsh. Farm and garden produce: Messrs R. Lambie and F. Gillanders. Potatoes: Mr. R. Dunn. Fruit: Mr. Betts, sen. Honey: Mr. Wareilp. Preserves, pickles, wine, etc.,; Mr. Shrimpton. Dairy produce: Mr. A. Lees. Bread, cakes, etc.;, Mr. Riley. Paintings: Mr. N. D. Connell. Fancy work: Mrs. T. Winks and Miss Willets. Handwriting: Mr. R. A. Browne. Pot plants were a magnificent displav. Mesdames Lovell (Hawera) and Edwards (Normanby) were the principal exhibitors, and prize winners, their baskets of ferns creating general admiration. Each had magnificent exhibitions in two collections of pot'plants, oho of which was won by Mrs. Lovell, and other by Mrs. Edwards. In this section Mrs. Lovell secured eight firsts and three seconds, and Mrs. Edwards four' 'firsts and eight seconds. Other prizewinners were: Mesdames E. Henderson, E. D. Scott, E. P. Grant, J. A, Archbold. G Kergan; Miss Howe, J. 'Pill and S. Bowman. * There'was a fine display also of cut (lowers. Mr. R. Gibson, of Riverlea, ' ihled some magnificent blooms of dafdils, including two fine trumpet ones, ■> Earl and Golden Chief, which'were '«n for the first time in New Zea;d. He also won with some magnifint blooms of roses, seenrinrr chamsn in this class. In dahlias T. Lines, '. W. Dee and Mrs. J. Edwards were ,'ie prize-winners. N. D. Council scored i nhlox drummondi, dianthus, mari'ilds, sunflower, collection bulbous or '.•herons rooted, perennial, marguerites •mil daisies, and collection yellow flowers. Mrß. Lovell obtained first prize for collection of white flowers, bilue flowers, flowering shrubs; aho zinnias, Milium, heath, antirrhinium and neI mesia. Other winners were Mesdames 'E. Cleaver, C.'Coxhcad, A. Morse, R. 1 P-nrko, A. T. Phillips. R. Balhmtine, Misses H. Stanners, P. Clements, E. Slinger, Anensen, R. and A. Preston; Messrs G. H. Hadler and Chas. Hunt. Fruit was a strong'section, pears, apples, peaches, passion fruit and nuts of excellent quality being tabled. The principal winners were: Messrs T. Don, S. Bowman, F, Jewell, H. H. Coxhend, Mesdames C. F. Raine, J. A. Archbold, D. E. Scott, and Miss Rowe. Mr. G. H. Hadler exhibited the new Fresco tomato, which is comparatively new, one cluster containing 25 tomatoes. It is of the semi-smooth skin variety. In pickles, preserves and wines, Mesdames A. T. Phillips, C. Chadwick, C. F. Raine, E. P. Grant and D. E. cScott were the principal prize-winners. Miss Flora Stewart, Mesdames J. M. Bowman and G. Briscoe, also winning.
The bread and cake section was also strong. The considered tile exhibition very satisfactory ns to quality. Miss 0. Rowe scored in the three scone classes, the tea cake and pikelets j Mrs. A. T. Phillips in plum puddings, mince pies, collection of sweets and biscuits and cakes. Other winners were Misses Coxhoad, 0. Clements, V. Antrobus, Flora Stewart, M. Grantham. Rub? Slackhouse, Myrtle Antrobus, Nina. Kilvington and G. Lees; Mesdames J. Gillespie, A. ft. Kerga.n, J. Nicholson, E. Cleaver and E. Antrobus.
Tn fancy work Mrs. 0. Brock was the nrincipal winner, other winners being Mesdames R. Burke, J. A. Arch bold, Gordon Kergan, E. P. Grant. Misse-s MoPhcrson, E. Johnson. E. Slinger, 0. Death, B. Forbes, K. Phillips, aad 0. Rowe. In. the children's section Nina Kilvington and Rubv Slackhouse were successful. F. H. Morgan won all the nrizos in wood-carving. In miscellaneous H. Linn, J. 11. Dixon and Stewart and Landsperg won prizes.
The decorative section was a charming feature. Miisses Derott and Lnvell nraetically divided the prize list. Misses and Rowe also took prizes. In 'he school children's section Jack Rod■era won the button bole prize out of ''■ i entries; Moses Moeahu won the bouiiiot under 14 years. Nina Kilvington, T helma Murdoch. Winnie Oldficld. Mere Ha toe. Agnes Whalen, Myrtle Antrobus \:id Winnie Slinger were successful.
Okaiawa school won the collection of lowers for school garden, and Arthur llickson the model miniature garden, ". Hunt tabled a fine collection of native flowers, grasses and berries,'which '"ivludcd nearly every variety of native berries and roots, which once proved the -rincipal food of the native. All were •atnlogued with the Maori name.
The exhibits in field and frarden sec-"ic-n were very good. Mnnsrolds and field turnips were fine samples, and gave vnof of the fertility of South Taranaki -iil. E. P. Grant, B. C. Gibson, S. Bow■n. TT. Parslow, W. Todd and Mrs R.
Vrke were the principal winners. In vegetables competition was very ecu and excellent samples were subletted. Onions were particularly good. T he prizes were well distributed. S. "owman, T. Dixon, G.
