TARANAKI EGG CIRCLE.
LECTURE OX POULTRY. A lecture was given last evening by Mr. A. E. Salisbury.. Government poul- . try instructor, to a gathering of thos! interested in poultry-keeping. There i was a large attendance, and Mr. W. Rcott, chairman of the Taranaki Egg : Circle, presided. I Mr. Salisbury said the Department's policy was not to advocate people taking up poultry farming as an independent business, as this required practical experience and a special aptitude for the work. It was in poultry-keeping conducted as a side line on the farm or by the suburban resident that the main development of the industry must take place. After a few genera! remarks, the lecturer went on to deal with the branch of the work most opportune at the present time —that of cullir.g r.r.d the selection of breeding stock. By means of live birds he demonstrated the points whereby the desirable breeding birds could be distinguished the drones of the flock. He stated that a great mistake was often made by utility breeders in ignoring breed characteristics, which must be given due consideration if the purity and distinctiveness of the various beautiful breeds at our disposal was to be retained.
